Pessary Fitting

Providing support for your pelvic organ prolapse

What is a pessary?

Pessaries are flexible devices that can be inserted in to the vagina to help support a pelvic organ prolapse. Some pessaries may also help with urinary incontinence.

Treatment for a prolapse

A prolapse is when a pelvic organ protrudes in to the vaginal tissue. Typically we see bladder, rectum, or uterine prolapses. Some will describe the sensation like a heaviness while others will be able to see and feel the tissue at the entrance of their vagina.

First line treatment for a prolapse is typically pelvic floor physiotherapy. Some will need additional treatment such as a pessary or (in more severe circumstances), surgical intervention from a specialist.

You can self refer yourself to PEI Pelvic and Breast Health Inc. for a pessary fitting after being cleared by a physician or nurse practitioner. Click the link below to print the form that your provider will need to sign.

During a pessary fitting the physiotherapist will perform a vaginal exam to measure for the appropriate style and size of pessary. You will try the pessary to be certain it is an appropriate fit before we order yours. You will also be educated on safety and caring for your device.
